Itron Completes Next Phase of Iberdrola's Smart Metering Program
Successful delivery of data collection system is a continuation of Itron's collaboration with Iberdrola to support the development of the smart grid in Spain
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash.—July 16, 2013—Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) announced today that it completed the delivery of its meter data collection system, a key component of Iberdrola's smart metering program. The project began with Iberdrola, Spain's premier energy group and one of the world's largest electricity utilities, in 2010. Together, Itron and Iberdrola have successfully reached this project milestone as part of the development and implementation of the broader advanced metering management (AMM) system for 2 million meters.
Iberdrola's smart meter program is focused on developing a new open and interoperable solution based on the PRIME* telecommunications protocol. Itron's solution not only supports smart metering functionalities but also enables progress toward the smart grid. Currently, Iberdrola is reading more than 1 million PRIME Meters per day and expects to reach the deployment and management of 2 million meters by the first quarter of 2014.
Itron's solution offers a flexible and robust data infrastructure that allows Iberdrola to optimize network management, reduce operational costs and enhance its quality of service for the benefit of consumers. Development and implementation of the Iberdrola AMM system includes the upgrade of the previous software release as well as general and specific improvements of Itron's meter data collection software.
